“We left Douglas, Arizona a short 3 days ago. Crossing the border was fairly uneventful – we were pulled over and the local Mexican Customs officials spent about 20 minutes going through the inside/outside of the coach as well as the truck. ( the ‘official’ was a 20 something female who appeared to be more curious than serious…) Once we were cleared we began our 140 mile drive east along Mexico Highway 2 and than south on Mexico Highway 10.
The early part of the drive followed the border and we were able to see the new fence that has been put in place by the USA. We also passed several groups of young men who were clearly trying to find a way to cross the border illegally.
About 20 miles from our destination we were once again pulled over by Mexican Customs at an immigration check point. Our coach and truck were once again searched and we had to provide all our ‘papers’. All the officials we came into contact with were very friendly but also very thorough – we have learned to be thankful that they are here ‘looking out’ for us turistas!!
This area is famous for it’s Mata Ortiz pottery as well as being home to a UNESCO World Heritage site. Everyone that we have come into contact with is very thankful that we are visiting. The economic downturn along with all the negative news in the media about traveling to Mexico has hurt this areas tourism business.

Spencer is also credited with discovering Jose Quezada and bringing the Mata Ortiz style of pottery into popularity. We had the privilege of meeting both Spencer and Emily as well as having dinner with them one evening.”
