Entry from: Progreso, Mexico
Entry Title: “Progreso via Carnival Cruise Ship Fantasy”

Entry:

“First off, I would like to say that anyone wanting to travel in the Yucatan region should refer to the publication, Yucatan Today (http://yucatantoday.com). It’s an excellent source to have handy when traveling and features information on hotels, attractions, restuarants, cultural parks and other services that you can imagine.

We began our journey in Yucatan by boarding a complimentary shuttle bus (mandatory, no personal transport other than cab, as I can remember) down the endless (~7 mile) pier from the ship to the edge of Progreso. The bus stops on Calle 25 before crossing 80. What awaited us as we got off the bus was a little market housed in a courtyard known as la Casa de la cultura where the townspeople sold souvenirs and enticed tourists with cheap massages and wares. From the bus stop, we walked directly across the street from the market to Global Car Rental. The attendant, Abraham, provided us a car on the spot, a red Dodge Attitude (automatic transmission, working AC, and only $50 after addition of full coverage insurance) which was in impressive shape. With us, he took the time to note (with a pen and paper) every minor mark around the car (even ones I could barely make out) as well as check with us the specs in the car before releasing it to us. I sat in and checked all the workings and everything seemed fine. All in all, a very courteous and professional service which we recommend to anyone wanting to rent a car in Progreso. After he made a xerox copy of my credit card and driver’s license, we loaded up and headed south down Calle 82 straight out of town toward the capital of Yucatan, Merida.

We used the Periferico (exactly like the city-circumventing interstate) to bypass Merida on our way south. It is easy to recognize the Periferico and hop on before entering the city as it passes over (overpass) ‘Calle 82′, but be sure to hit the exit denoted “Aeropuerto” before reaching the overpass or you’ll miss it. That’s how we ended up almost driving through Merida. Second time’s the charm!

From the Periferico, you can basically follow the numerous signs directly to Uxmal. It will guide you to to Highway 261 south where Uxmal is a straight shot. Easy as pie.

The ride was comfortable, and we listened to several Spanish morning talk shows on the radio (where the word puntos was repeated quite often. context?… we couldn’t figure it out.). Waritta took the opportunity to take some pictures of the signs and sights we encountered on our drive as we neared our first stop — Hacienda Temozon Sur.”
