Puerto Angel and Interior Oaxaca
“Sitting in an internet cafe, in the city of Miahuatlan near Oaxaca, is a pleasant experience. The weather is very comfortable and life is multisensory. The following probably seems like an odd statement, but in Mexico, you cannot forget that you are surrounded by life – good and bad smells, interesting sights and constant sounds . Birds sing, church bells ring, dust blows, music plays, hammers ring, people laugh, vehicles rev up, and vendors slowly walk by big open doors balancing baskets with breads, fruit and vegetables on their heads. Dogs run by and people sweep the streets. Yes, it´s all very pleasant… A little reminder, if you just want to check the photos press the slide show button. One week ago we left San Cristobal and travelled all night to Puerto Angel near Huatulco. Night travelling was not a bad way to go as we didn´t have to pay for a room that night and we slept for most (or part) of the trip. As usual the buses are kept at refrigerator temperatures and my sarong came in handy as a blanket. We arrived in Pochutla at 9 a.m., found a taxi to a recommended hotel and had breakfast on the beach. We changed into swimwear and just soaked up the warm sun on Puerto Angel’s Panteon Beach. Panteon is the MExican word for cemetary…We were definitely a little tired from the long bus ride through the very windy mountain roads but being on the beach was a wonderful way to recuperate. We were not used to the low altitude or humid weather though, and, just suffered a little… Poor us. We met two bikers who were travelling through Mexico for several weeks on their Harleys and having a blast. They were from Welland, Ontario. Maybe something for Brad and Bruce W. to consider… The next day, we went back into Pochulta and caught a van to Miahuatlan, where Scott lives. We met Scott last year in Boquete, Panama and throughout the past year stayed in touch with him. We were excited to learn that he had accepted an ESL teaching job at a university in Miahuatlan and it became part of our plans to pay him a visit on our way north. Miahauatlan is about a 2 hour drive southwest of Oaxaca City which we visited a few years ago. I prepared myself for the trip into the interior by taking a 1/4 of a Gravol and carrying my fleece as I knew that we would be travelling along sinuous roads climbing higher and higher and back into cooler weather. Six hours after we started out, Scott met us at the Eclipse terminal and there was a happy reunion. He is graciously sharing his 2 bedroom apartment with us while we visit and has made us feel very welcome. His love of this special city has transferred to us and we have come to truly enjoyed the spirit of the Mexican people in this place far from any tourist area. We may have to return. During our one week in Miahuatlan, we have seen Valentine celebrations, walked along the river´s edge past people bathing and washing clothes, checked out the Sunday activities in the square, bartered in the fantastic Monday market, celebrated Chris´ birthday, visited a local village school in Santa Cruz Xitla which caused quite the commotion, discovered a hidden spring in a grotto, attended a party given by the new ESL teachers at the university and had a tour of the beautiful univeristy. All in one week! The people here are very friendly and we have been asked over and over and over if we would consider teaching English here. It may happen. It would be a good place to live for a few months. Now we are planning the next leg of our trip traveling up the Pacific coast of Mexico to Puerto Vallarta and then east over to Ajijic. Tomorrow we will leave at 5 a.m. to go back to Pochutla and then take a bus to Puerto Escondido. The ride was bad heading to Miahuatlan and we can only imagine how it will be going in the opposite direction. More than 15 years ago, Amy did this same trip on her way to live with a Mexican family in Salina Cruz. Eight hours from Oaxaca on winding roads. This weekend Carnaval is being celebrated all over Mexico so we booked a hotel in Puerto Escondido for the weekend.”
